Bord Gáis Energy Review Ireland 2026 — Are They Still the Cheapest?

A full review of Bord Gáis Energy in 2026 — their electricity and gas tariffs, new customer discounts, dual fuel deals, Rewards programme, and whether they are actually the cheapest supplier in Ireland right now.

Bord Gáis Energy is one of Ireland's most recognised energy brands. For many households, it is the default answer to "which gas supplier should I use?" But that reputation is built on history and brand recognition more than on consistently being the cheapest. Whether they actually offer the best rates in 2026 is a different question — and the answer changes month to month.

Who Is Bord Gáis Energy?

Despite the name, Bord Gáis Energy (BGE) is no longer state-owned or directly connected to Gas Networks Ireland, the company that operates Ireland's gas pipes. BGE's retail arm was acquired by Centrica — the UK energy group that also owns British Gas — in 2014. The brand name carries decades of Irish trust, but the business is now a commercial subsidiary of a large UK-listed company.

That does not make it a bad supplier. Centrica is well-capitalised and BGE operates a strong Irish customer service team. But the name alone should not be the reason you stay with them or default to them without comparing alternatives.

What Does Bord Gáis Energy Offer?

BGE is one of the most comprehensive energy suppliers in the Irish market, offering:

Electricity tariffs: A range of options including standard, green, and smart meter time-of-use tariffs for customers with smart meters installed by ESB Networks.

Gas tariffs: Historically one of BGE's strongest areas. They are one of the largest gas suppliers in Ireland and frequently run deep new customer discounts on gas. If you are on the national gas network, BGE should always be included in your gas comparison.

Dual fuel packages: Electricity and gas from one supplier, with an additional percentage discount for bundling both. BGE's dual fuel offer is generally competitive and worth checking if you use both fuels.

BGE Energy Rewards: A loyalty programme offering points redeemable for shopping vouchers and other benefits. The value is modest — typically worth €20–€40 per year — and rarely offsets the savings available from switching to a better deal elsewhere. It is a nice bonus but should not drive the decision.

Smart meter tariffs: BGE offers time-of-use plans for customers with smart meters. These charge a lower rate overnight and a higher rate at peak times, rewarding households that can shift usage to off-peak hours.

App and online account management: The BGE app and web portal are well-regarded, with bill management, usage tracking, and direct debit management.

Are They Still the Cheapest?

This is the question most people are actually asking. The honest answer: not always, and it changes regularly.

BGE has historically been competitive on gas — often offering the deepest discount of any supplier. On electricity, they face sharper competition from Energia, SSE Airtricity, and Community Power, which regularly undercut on unit rates.

For a household using 4,200 kWh of electricity per year, the difference between BGE's best new customer electricity rate and the absolute cheapest deal on the market can range from €0 to €120 depending on the time of year and current promotions. On gas, the gap is usually smaller — BGE is frequently at or near the top for new gas customers, but not always.

The Long-Standing Customer Problem

The biggest issue at Bord Gáis Energy — and at every other Irish supplier — is not the new customer rate. It is what happens 12 months later.

The typical pattern:

  1. You join BGE on a new customer deal with a 25–35% discount on the unit rate
  2. Twelve months later, the discount expires quietly
  3. You are now on the standard rate, which is 25–35% higher
  4. You either compare and switch, or keep paying the inflated rate

Customers who joined BGE several years ago and have never reviewed their plan are likely paying €200–€400 more per year than someone who switched last month — even if that new customer also switched to BGE.

If you have been with Bord Gáis Energy (or any supplier) for more than 12 months without reviewing your plan, now is the time to check. Our price alert system can notify you automatically when a better deal becomes available.

Should You Switch to Bord Gáis Energy?

Switch to BGE if:

  • They currently have the best rate for your fuel type when you compare live rates
  • Their dual fuel bundle comes out cheaper than two separate best-deal accounts elsewhere
  • You want smart meter time-of-use pricing and they have the most competitive rate for your usage pattern

Do not assume BGE is cheapest because of the name. Check their current tariffs against all other suppliers in a single comparison before you commit.

See Bord Gáis Energy's current tariffs on their supplier page and compare them alongside Electric Ireland, Energia, Flogas, and every other active Irish supplier.
