Smart meters are being rolled out across Ireland by ESB Networks, and they are free to every household. Once installed, a smart meter unlocks cheaper night-rate electricity tariffs, gives you real-time usage data, and eliminates estimated bills. This guide covers how to apply, what to expect, and what benefits you'll get.
What Is a Smart Meter?
A smart meter is a digital electricity meter that:
- Sends readings automatically to ESB Networks (no more estimated bills)
- Records your usage in 30-minute intervals
- Displays real-time consumption on an in-home display unit
- Enables time-of-use tariffs where you pay different rates at different times of day
In Ireland, smart meters are installed and owned by ESB Networks — the state body that manages the electricity distribution grid. Your energy supplier (Electric Ireland, Bord Gáis, SSE Airtricity, etc.) remains the same; only the meter changes.
Are Smart Meters Free in Ireland?
Yes. Smart meter installation is completely free for Irish households. The rollout is funded through ESB Networks' regulated revenue, which is spread across all electricity bills via network charges.
There is no catch: you do not need to sign up for any new tariff, commit to a new supplier, or pay any fee.
How to Apply for a Smart Meter in Ireland
- Visit esbnetworks.ie and navigate to the smart meter registration page
- Enter your MPRN (Meter Point Reference Number) — found on your electricity bill
- Choose a preferred installation date
- An ESB Networks engineer visits your home and installs the meter (typically takes 30–60 minutes)
- You receive a written confirmation once your meter is active on the network
Alternatively, call ESB Networks on 1800 928 123 to register by phone.
Current wait times: ESB Networks is rolling out smart meters at scale across Ireland. In some areas the wait can be several months. Apply early.
What Happens After Installation?
Once your smart meter is installed and connected to ESB Networks:
- Estimated bills stop immediately — all billing is based on actual half-hourly reads
- Your in-home display unit shows real-time electricity usage and cost
- You become eligible for time-of-use electricity tariffs from any Irish supplier
It typically takes 6–8 weeks after installation before your supplier can activate a time-of-use (night-rate) tariff. Once they do, you can switch to a smart tariff immediately.
What Tariffs Does a Smart Meter Unlock?
With a smart meter, you become eligible for:
Night-rate / time-of-use tariffs: These offer a reduced unit rate for overnight electricity use (typically 11pm–8am or 11pm–9am). The overnight rate is typically 12–18c/kWh versus 30–40c/kWh for standard daytime use.
Smart tariff plans: Some suppliers offer more sophisticated time-of-use pricing with peak, off-peak, and overnight rates throughout the day.
These tariffs are particularly valuable for:
- EV owners charging overnight (can save €400–€600/year)
- Heat pump users
- Households with storage heaters or immersion heaters on timers
- Anyone flexible about when they run large appliances
Use GoSwitch's smart meter tool to estimate your potential saving from switching to a night-rate tariff.
Will a Smart Meter Reduce My Bill?
Not automatically. A smart meter is a measurement and communication device — it does not reduce consumption by itself. The savings come from:
- Switching to a night-rate tariff (requires smart meter) and shifting usage to cheaper overnight hours
- Eliminating estimated bills that may have overcharged you in the past
- Monitoring your usage and identifying energy waste through the in-home display
For households that cannot shift usage to night hours (e.g., you work nights, have young children, or use all appliances during the day), the benefit of a smart meter may be limited to accurate billing rather than a lower tariff.
Privacy and Data
ESB Networks collects 30-minute interval consumption data from your smart meter. This data is used for billing, grid management, and network planning. Your data rights under GDPR apply — you can request your data, object to specific uses, and opt out of granular data collection (reverting to daily reads only) by contacting ESB Networks.
Your energy supplier receives your consumption data from ESB Networks for billing purposes; they do not have access to your detailed interval data without your consent.
Smart Meters and Dual Fuel (Gas)
The current smart meter rollout covers electricity only. Gas smart meters are not yet part of the standard Irish rollout as of 2026. Gas meters in Ireland continue to require manual reads.
